Exam #1: Making Questions
TAKE OUT your Student ID Cards. You will HAVE some time to REVIEW in your groups, while I CHECK the ID cards. Dictionaries will NOT be allowed. TRY NOT to WORRY about tiny spelling mistakes. Native speakers MAKE them all the time. Just SPELL things the way that they SOUND.
Students will (a) LISTEN to the teacher's explanations and instructions and (b) TAKE the exam.
The exam is to see if you can MAKE English questions about events that you WITNESS (that you hear and see). First I will SHOW you about 10-12 minutes of a video. AFTER WATCHING the video you will HAVE 30 minutes to WRITE questions.
LET'S GET ready for today's exam. TURN OFF your cellphones. PUT them in your bags and CLOSE the bags. PUT AWAY everything except the things that you NEED for the exam. PUT AWAY your pencil cases, too.
Please TAKE a look at the exam sheet ... WRITE your student number and your name (in Roman letters, of course). LOOK at the directions on the front side.
For each of the following question words, write one (ONLY ONE) discussion question about something specific that you saw or heard in the video. Use a different verb in each question(注意:助動詞は 自由 ですけど 同じ動詞は 二度と 使わない様に).
You will WRITE seven questions, one of which will BEGIN with each of these Wh- question words: who, what, which, when, where, how, and why. You will NOT be ASKED to divide the questions into 4区 , but you must use the question patterns correctly AND have the verb cluster (m V) in an appropriate tense.
Make sure that you MAKE questions that are specific questions about the video story, NOT vague or mechanical questions(曖昧質問又は決まり文句が点数無し). Use people's names OR describe them in a noun phrase. Only after that can you use pronouns (he, she, they) to refer to them. Questions like these will get 0 points:
X Who is Hanako? X What did they eat for dinner? X Who did Misato talk to? X What do you think about calligraphy? X Which person is younger, Kobayashi or Yamada? X How about the Happy Cult? X Why does Shinko live in Hamamatsu?
|
These are the kinds of questions someone could ask, even if they HAD NEVER WATCHED the video clip.
Now LOOK at the back side of the exam paper. It has a list of characters names. You may LOOK at these names and WRITE down brief notes (in Japanese or English) about the video story as you WATCH the video. DO NOT TURN the paper over or WRITE on the front side ... until the video is FINISHED and the teacher TELLS you to START. Then you will HAVE 30 minutes to WRITE the seven wh- questions. During this time you may LOOK at your notes and the characters' names on the back side.
Now are you ready for the exam? Do you have any questions? It is your last chance to ASK ... so, please ASK the teacher NOW.
If you FINISH the exam early and want to LEAVE the room, TURN your paper OVER and RAISE your hand. Sit quietly until the teacher PICKS it UP. Then LEAVE the room quietly. COME back after the exam FINISHES and all the papers have been COLLECTED.

Flow of Conversation
Now LET'S PRACTICE Connecting Sentences with Thought Questions. This can be either individually OR as Group Work. We will WRITE the Thought Questions.
During the Group Work Leaders should MAKE SURE that all students that are online KEEP their microphones ON (so that they can SPEAK) AND their cameras ON (so that they can SEE each other).

Group X2 Week 10 |
Leader: Hanako |
Check List: 3-Minute Routine |
((鈴)): Shinko's // red alarm // clock |
((山)): Shinko's red alarm clock // woke her up // for school. |
((高)): Did Shinko's alarm clock wake her up // for school? |
((伊)): Yes, it // did. |
At the top of your report WRITE
(message #1) your group's name, "Week 10",
(message #2) the leader's name,
(message #3) Check List: 3-Minute Routine
Follow the 3-Minute Routine explained in Lesson 1 for each sentence (and question, perhaps). The sentences should be about scenes from Someplace in This Universe and/or Distortion Girl.
If you HAVE any questions about what you are supposed to be DOING, first DISCUSS the problem with your group, then ... if you are still in doubt, DO what you or your group THINK is right, (RAISE your hand if you're in the classroom) and SHOW it to the teacher (the PDS Cycle).
