Target Sentences:
Review and Revise |
---|
The best way to PUT sentence patterns into your long-term memory is by REVIEWING lists of Target Sentences. Reviewing is what A.J. Hoge CALLS deep learning.
First we have to CREATE our Target Lists. For a Review Cycle of 30 days, we will NEED 30 lists. Let's WRITE one list every day ... each list on a separate sheet of paper (which has been FOLDED into 4 equal columns).
This will be your homework for the first month. It should take you about 10 minutes for each list (of about five 4区 sentences). WRITE a title in Big Letters in the middle of the top line of each sheet (Day 1, Day 2, ... Day 30).
Day 1 s1 s2 s3 ... |
Day 2 s1 s2 s3 ... |
。。。 | Day 30 s1 s2 s3 ... |
USE the 1st and 3rd minutes of the 3-Minute Routine: one minute (or less) to THINK of a sentence while WATCHING part of one of the assigned videos AND then one minute (plus any extra time) to WRITE the sentence (on folded paper). Two minutes for each new sentence.
Do NOT just write each sentence, PRACTICE it. REPEAT(声を出す)each Noun Phrase and each Verb Cluster about 5 times as you WRITE them. When you finish, REPEAT the entire sentence 2 or 3 times without LOOKING at it.
Review and Revise
Now we can REVIEW our sentences and REVISE our lists. LOOK at the sentences on the list that you WROTE one month ago. Let's CALL that "Old Day x"
REMOVE any sentences that you REMEMBER well ... if you can RECALL and USE them quickly, easily, and automatically. Congratuations, they are in your long-term memory.
Or maybe they were just too easy. Can you ADD some informtion to the sentences to MAKE them more interesting and challenging ... sentences worth practicing?
Old Day x s1 s2 s3 ... Class, Grp, name, etc. |
。。。 | Day x s1 s3 s4 s5 s6 s7 ... |
USE the 3rd minute of the 3-Minute Routine as you REWRITE each of sentences that REMAIN on your list. PRACTICE each part of the sentence (details above) as you WRITE and then the entire sentence, when you have FINISHED. MAKE any changes (to grammar or content) that you think will IMPROVE them. This kind of review should TAKE only one minute per sentence.
If you still HAVE some extra time, ADD some new sentences to your list using the same 2-minute procedure (described above) that you used to CREATE the list.
Question Practice
Target Sentences are declarative sentences about what happened in the assigned videos. If you want to practice making questions you can WRITE questions instead of REWRITING the Target Sentences (with repetition practice). This, by the way, might be good preparation for Exam #1.
A Life Hack
This is a "Life Hack". You can use this technique for the rest of your life ... to HELP you REMEMBER anything (historical dates, chemical formulas, or people's names and birthdays) ... or to PRACTICE skills (drawing sketches, solving Rubic's cube, or playing songs on your guitar).
A 30-day cycle is easy to remember (the day of the month), but you can LENGTHEN or SHORTEN the cycle. You can even MOVE items from a shorter cycle to a longer cycle to continue reviewing, but less intensively.
