To develop students' media literacy. To notice the social, cultural, gender, and "American" messages in Disney. To understand the Disney Worldview. To consider whether Disney is "good" for children. 到達目標 ”DISNEY as Cultural Teacher” This is a media-based course on ”reading Disney”: how to understand the social and cultural messages in Disney features, from the earliest animations to full-length ”live action” movies, and also including the various Disneylands. (このメディア英語の講義ではディズニーを読んでいきます。初期のアニメ映画から生のアクション映画まで、ディズニー映画が伝えようとする社会的・文化的メッセージの理解に努めます。また下記のようなディズニーランドに関する様々な側面についても考察していきます。) 授業の内容・ 計画 An examination of the *cultural messages” contained in Disney entertainments. From the beginning, Walt Disney sought to present ”American” values and viewpoints through his productions. The nature of this Americanism has changed over the years as American society has changed. Some of the topics: How has Mickey Mouse ”grown up”? How did Walt Disney try to spread American values? How does ”Disneyfication” work (changing history, literature, fairy tales, and even nature to fir the Disney formula)? What are Disney's messages about women and foreigners? What is the Disney Worldview? Is Disney good for children? How has Disney adapted to different countries? (Disneylands and sound dubbing) “cultural messages”の試験は、ディズニー漫画、生のアクション映画、TVショウ、映画、アミューズメントパーク等を含みます。初期の段階から、ウォールト・ディズニーは自分の作品を通してアメリカの価値観・立場を提示しようとしてきました。アメリカニズムの本質は、アメリカの社会が変化するに従って年々変化してきております。 ミッキー・マウスはどのように成長したのですか？ ウォールト・ディズニーはどのようにアメリカの価値観を広げようとしたのですか？ ディズニー化はどのような点に見られますか？ 女性や外国人に関するディズニーのメッセージは何ですか？ ディズニーの世界観は何ですか？ ディズニーは子供にとって素晴らしいものですか？ ディズニーは他国にどのように浸透したのですか？ The first semester will cover Disney animations: the earliest ones and three of the recent popular ones: Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Pocahontas. 評価方法 （基準等） Evaluation based on participation (10%), reading/viewing worksheets (30%), and exams on the movies (60%). 授業外の学修 (予習･復習) For homework, read assigned chapters in the bilingual text and do the Reading Quizzes.
