科目のねらい | | This course aims to provide the students with opportunities to consider the significance of a language in the society. There are differences in linguistic properties and semantic values in any society due to verious social factors. The course is designed to enhance understanding of social functions of a language. The data referred to in the course are basically in English but other cases in Japanese and other language will be mentioned occasionally. |

到達目標 | | This course has two concrete purposes to be achieved by students. One is acquisition of basic concepts of relationships between language and society, which are discussed in terms of linguistic varieties and their semantic values. The other is achievement of academic tasks in English. The second aim requires students to fulfill some prerequisites in the foreign language, such as taking lectures, making notes, reading a textbook and supplement materials, answering quizzes and the examination. The students taking this course might have difficulties in accomplishing the tasks, but they will improve their English skills efficient enough to study an academic subject in English. |

授業外の学修 (予習・復習) | | The students will be requested to prepare for the class by reading a target unit of the textbook, and they also will be assigned to read complementary materials in order to reinforce understanding of the lecture. |
