科目のねらい | | This course aims to provide the students with opportunities to consider the significance of language in communication. Language plays a critical role in human interaction even though nonlinguistic media, such as facial expressions, also carry important information. The course is designed to enhance understanding of language functions in communities. The data referred to in the course are basically in English but cases in Japanese and other languages will be mentioned occasionally. |

到達目標 | | This course has two concrete purposes to be achieved by students. One is acquisition of basic concepts of language and communication sciences, which are discussed in terms of linguistics, sociology and psychology. The other is achievement of academic tasks in English. The second aim requires students to fulfill some prerequisites in the foreign language, such as taking lectures, making notes, reading a textbook and supplement materials, answering quizzes and the examination. The students taking this course might have difficulties in accomplishing the tasks, but they will improve their English skills efficient enough to study an academic subject in English. |

授業外の学修 (予習・復習) | | The students will be requested to prepare for the class by reading a target unit of the textbook, and they also will be assingned to read complementary materials in order to reinforce understanding of the lecture. |
