The second semester topics, however, will include larger social, cultural and political issues of interest, both in Japan and in the world. Students will learn how to agree and disagree effectively and appropriately while discussing problems in a group discussion. Students will also gain experience in leading class discussions about topics they are interested in. The elements and rules of formal debate will also be introduced, and students will work on taking, articulating, and defending positions logically in a debate.
