（目標） | | This course aims to provide the students with opportunities to consider the significance of language in society. A language is often considered as if it were identical to all the social members, however, the linguistic properties and semantic values are different due to social factors: geographical regions, culture, social classes, etc. The course is designed to enhance understanding of social functions of a language.
The course covers basic concepts of sociolinguistics: dialects, register, language contact, etc. The data referred to in the course are basically in English but other cases in Japanese and other language will be mentioned occasionally.
This course also targets the students who are eager to study academic topics in English: studying through English, not just studying English. The lectures will be delivered exclusively in English. Therefore, the students are expected to be competent enough to follow English lectures and to read English materials. |
