Language plays a critical role in human interaction even though nonlinguistic media, such as facial expressions, also carry important information. The course is designed to enhance understanding of language functions in communities. The course covers basic notions of communication and language sciences: communication models, the origin of language,phonology, morphology, etc. The data referred to in the course are basically in English but other cases in Japanese and other language will be mentioned occasionally.. This course also targets the students who are eager to study academic topics in English: studying through English, not just studying English. The lectures will be delivered exclusively in English. Therefore, the students are expected to be competent enough to follow English lectures and to read English materials. 授業の内容・ スケジュール 1. Introduction of the course 2.
