The P.D.S. Cycle and
Conversation Starters
Our goal in this class (and, hopefully, beyond) is to LEARN to HAVE interesting conversations in English. The process INVOLVES three phases: (1) DECIDING what to say, (2) DECIDING how to say it in English, and (3) OPENING your mouth and actually SPEAKING English in a conversation. Within each phase, we can USE the PDS(改善する)Cycle: PLAN(計画), DO(実行), and SEE what HAPPENS(評価)-- to IMPROVE our English AND the flow of our conversations.
Normal conversations are NOT PLANNED in advance, but the beginning, the first sentence, the Conversation Starter CAN be PLANNED. Our conversations TAKE PLACE in the classroom. We TALK about assigned video stories ... that you WATCH for at least 10 minutes a day outside of class. While you WATCH these videos, you should CARRY OUT Phases One and Two. Then you'll be PREPARED for Phase Three: the discussion in class.
Plan: Decide WHAT to say in Japanese. Don't just repeat phrases from a textbook or your teacher. Do NOT copy English subtitles. MAKE your sentences original. USE your own ideas. Almost any sentence can be USED to START a conversation, and while there is NO perfect Conversation Starter, some ARE better than others.
Do: Watch the assigned video. Find interesting scenes. Write one 4区和文 about each scene. Do this for several scenes, about 10 or so.
See: Look at each of your sentences. THINK about its meaning. Would a person who had seen the video be able to IDENTIFY that scene? Would a person who had not seen the video WANT to KNOW more? If the answers are both YES, then it is probably a very good Conversation Starter.
Plan: Decide HOW to say your Conversation Starters in English. After WRITING each Japanese sentence, it is time to SPEAK English (not write English). The English sentence pattern is often similar to the Japanese sentence pattern, but the noun phrases are CONNECTED to the verb in a different order.
LOOK at S+(最初)and SAY the noun phrase in English. Next LOOK at V(最後)and SAY the verb in the appropriate tense(過去, 過去進行, 過去完了, sometimes 現在形). Then GO in the opposite direction(逆方向). SAY the O+ phrase and/or the C phrase in English, and finally the A+ phrase (s). (There may be more than one of these noun phrases.) If there is no S+, you will probably USE the English pronoun(代名詞)that is IMPLIED by the meaning of the Japanese sentence.
S+ 区 | A+ 区 | O+/C 区 | V 区 |
Shinkoは | 母と | 喧嘩している。 | |
Debbie 先生は | 英語の授業で | 生徒を | 指名した。 |
MisatoとShinkoは | 親友 | です。 | |
電車に間に | 合った。 | ||
S 区 | V 区 | O/C 区 | +A 区 |
Shinko | was FIGHTING | with her mother. | |
Her teacher Debbie | CALLED ON | some students | in English class. |
Misato and Shinko | are | very good friends. | |
They | ARRIVED | in time for their train. |
MAKING English sentences is very difficult for many students. This process (Write Japanese => Speak English) should MAKE speaking English much easier, although it will also SLOW DOWN the conversation. KEEP PRACTICING. Practice MAKES difficult things easy. As you practice, REPEAT the sentence faster and faster (like the Bounce Patrol). Eventually you will be able to SAY the sentences that you have PRACTICED quickly, easily, and automatically.
Do: Look at each 4 区和文 . Say each 区 in English(最初 , 最後 , 逆方向).
See: Do you KNOW all the English words for the verbs and in the noun phrases? If not, LOOK them UP in your dictionary or on Wikipedia. Can you SAY the sentences quickly, easily, and automatically? If not, repeat each difficult sentence over and over. REPEAT it faster ... with feeling ... again ... while IMAGINING the meaning. Repeat without looking at the Japanese sentence ... CONCENTRATING only on the image and the feeling of what you are saying.
Plan: Have a real conversation with other students that have seen the video. Imagine that ... what you SAW really happened(本当の事, not just in a video). We all SAW that same thing, but we HAVE different ideas about it. It does not MATTER(どうでも良い)if our ideas are right or wrong. (This is a conversation--NOT a test.) We will SAY ... what we THINK OR IMAGINED was HAPPENING (as we watched the video). Some people in our conversation group might DISAGREE. If so, they will SAY so--TELL us we are wrong. That will MAKE the conversation very interesting and enjoyable. It will be a real conversation.
But, of course, we will usually be right, because we SAW what HAPPENED. Then the next person to speak will ADD information with a strong connection to our sentence (probably NOT one of their Conversation Starters). Thus the conversation will CONTINUE step by step, sentence by sentence until we RUN OUT of things to SAY. Then ... we BEGIN a new conversation with another Conversation Starter.
Do: In the classroom AND online, we have group discussions (3-4 students in each group). And each group writes a report during their meeting on Teams. They WRITE the report in the Chat Box inside the meeting. (It will also automatically APPEAR on the Channel Page outside of the meeting).
See: After the meeting you can REVIEW your conversation. (The students in other groups can also READ it and LEARN from your conversation.) You should THINK deeply about these questions: How long was your conversation? Thirty minutes? How many sentences were there? How could you make it longer and more interesting? What information could you have ADDED to the discussion?
Plan B: Write Japanese,
then Speak English
The only way to learn to speak English ... is to DECIDE what you want to say and then say it ... SPEAK English. What you actually WANT to SAY may be a little difficult. Don't GIVE UP ... BREAK AWAY from the Textbook English that you learned in school. DECIDE for yourself what you want to say ... in Japanese ... WRITE it DOWN on paper ... then SPEAK English while looking(部分的に)at the noun phrases and the verb clusters. You can TRY USING a very powerful technique: the 最初, 最後, 逆方向 pattern. This is Plan B: Write Japanese, then speak English. Plan B is a good way to LEAVE your comfort zone and TAKE your English to the next level.
Plan | Japanese Record |
Speaking Practice with Repetition |
English Record |
Haruna | Speak Eng | ||
A | Speak Eng | Write Eng | |
B | Write Japanese | Speak Eng |
The conversation will BEGIN with your 4区和文 Conversation Starters. Each member of the group WRITES their own sentence about the assigned video story ... NO discussion(勝手に ばらばらの和文を 出す). AFTER the sentences have been written, it is time to DISCUSS them and DECIDE which one will GENERATE the best (longest, most interesting) conversation.

Group X2 Week 4 |
Leader: Hanako |
Plan B: Write Japanese, then speak English |
Step 3: Sentences |
X Ellenは 薬を 飲んだ。 |
X EllenとScottは Ellenの病室で kissを した。 |
O Stanley達は groundで 野球を していた。 |
X GonzoとEllenは 更衣室で 口論を した。 |
Stanleyが batteryを 組んだ。 |
Catcherは Gloria だった。 |
その試合は 大差で 負けた。 |
Stanleyは 結果の所為で 落ち込んでた。 |
---Next Conversation--- |
X Ellenは 急いで 薬を 隠した。 |
X Shoopは Trapperに 報告した。 |
O Ellenは 診察室で Gonzoに 会った。 |
Now you CONTINUE the conversation for as long as you can ... ADDING information in written Japanese sentences ... NO discussion(勝手に 関係が 深い 和文を 出す). After each Japanese sentence, the student who WROTE it SAYS it in English. Everyone can READ the Japanese sentence. Everyone in the group KNOWS what the student WANTS to SAY. EVERYONE can HELP by PROVIDING the English words that are necessary to EXPRESS the idea. They can all help the person by LOOKING UP those words in their dictionaries (paper, electric, or Smartphone). The entire group HELPS the person who is SPEAKING English.
Everyone LISTENS carefully to the speaker ... and they REPEAT ... NO discussion in Japanese. It's English Only Time. If anyone SUSPECTS that there is a mistake OR a better way (a sentence which is easier to say, easier to understand) then instead of repeating they SHOUT OUT their improved sentence OR noun phrase.
The student who CAME UP with the sentence in the first place BECOMES the (temporary) leader. That student will, hopefully, NOTICE the difference. They will THINK about the change and ... the final decision BELONGS to them.
If this final sentence is difficult for any of the students to SAY quickly, easily, and automatically ... then everyone should REPEAT it over and over ... GOING faster and faster ... PUTTING more and more feeling into it. When this is FINISHED someone else WRITES the next Japanese sentence.
Your conversation will be very, very slow at first. Don't be DISCOURAGED ... BE patient. Practice MAKES difficult things easy AND slow conversations faster (in the long run). These conversations, by the way, can WANDER from one topic to another. If it HAPPENS smoothly and naturally, that's perfectly fine. When nobody in the group can THINK of anything else to ADD to the conversation, DRAW a horizontal line and START OVER with new Conversation Starters (one per student).
PDS Cycle: Edit
Your Group Reports
When the bell RINGS at the end of class, your meeting on Teams should END. The entire Group Report will automatically have been POSTED on the Channel Page for your group. You can REVIEW your conversations AND you should. THINK deeply about all the questions that you should have ASKED yourself in phases one to three. (SEE the "See:" sections above.)
If you can THINK of better noun phrases OR sentences, CORRECT your own messages. Yes, you can EDIT them anytime that you are free, from anywhere in cyberspace. USING the P. D. S. Cycle in this way will HELP you REVIEW the story and IMPROVE your English.
During the Group Work Leaders should MAKE SURE that all students that are online KEEP their microphones ON (so that they can SPEAK) AND their cameras ON (so that they can SEE each other).

Step 3: Sentences |
X Ellenは 薬を 飲んだ。 |

At the top of your report WRITE
(message #1) your group's name, "Week 4",
(message #2) the leader's name,
(message #3) Plan B: Write Japanese, then speak English, and
(message #4) Step 3: Sentences.
THEN START WRITING your Japanese sentences about the assigned video. DIVIDE each sentence into 4区. Then SAY the sentence in English. Do NOT WRITE the English sentence ... SAY it out loud. Everyone REPEATS ... or SHOUTS OUT a better version of the sentence. REPEAT the best sentence for practice.
Your sentences should be connected to each other .... like a normal conversation. Your conversation(s) should be about Saijo no Meii or Holly Jones and her influenza.
If you HAVE any questions about what you are supposed to be DOING, first DISCUSS it in your group, then ... if you are still in doubt, DO what you THINK is right, RAISE your hand and SHOW it to the teacher (the PDS Cycle, aka PDCA Cycle).
