Names: Who's Who?

Body Stories is a drama series about the human body. The English dialogs may be difficult for students to understand. Anyone, however, can UNDERSTAND a lot of what HAPPENS simply by WATCHING carefully, even with the sound off. We can SEE what people are doing. We can HEAR (if we don't turn off the sound) their tone of voice and TELL if they are happy, in love, angry, or sad. Do NOT FOCUS on the details of the dialog at first. CONCENTRATE on the story. And to do that, you NEED to KNOW who the characters are--MATCH the names with the faces.

Holly Jones is a singer in a rock band. The other members are Dave, Sally, and Alex. Alex's girlfriend Monica hangs out with them. Holly shares an apartment (British: flat) with Rachael.

Saijo no Meii AND Unsung Cinderella were TV hospital dramas (based on mangas). The Japanese dialogs are easy for students to understand. Mikoto Saijo is a new hot-shot surgeon at Heisei Central Hospital, just back from America. Kurumi Aihara is a new pharmacist, who is training at Yorosu Hospital. Midori Aoi is her mentor.

Exam #2: Extended Answers

Today you will HAVE your second of three exams. It will be an in-class exam. There is no online option. When the exam begins you will be PRESENTED with 6 questions and be GIVEN directions like this:

Choose two (ONLY TWO) of the following questions. Give a short answer. Then add more information or some comments using 4 full sentences (just as you might do in a normal conversation).

You will GET 30 minutes to ANSWER the two questions ... with extended answers. You will NOT be ASKED to divide noun phrases OR sentences into 4区 .

We will NOT WATCH any videos today, prior to the exam. You should have PREPARED for the exam by REVIEWING Saijo no Meii episode 1, Holly Jones and influenza, and Unsung Cinderella episode 5. Try to REMEMBER people's names AND FILL your head with as much information about the stories as possible, so that you will HAVE lots of concrete, interesting information to ADD to your two short answers.

I'll GIVE you some time to REFRESH your memory about the names and events in these three stories. You can USE Plan A--Speak English, then write English--and (Haruna's) Steps 2 and 3--a noun phrase describing one of the people in the story => the name => a sentence about something they did.

Time for You to Practice

Steps 2-3: Noun phrase => name => sentence

((鈴)): a // young hot-shot // surgeon
((山)): That's Mikoto Saijo.
((高)): He // is // a new doctor // at Heisei Central Hospital.
Now LET's GO to your channels on Teams to ENJOY some English practice in your discussion groups.
You NEED to CHOOSE a leader.

At the top of your report WRITE
(message #1) your group's name, "Week 13",
(message #2) the leader's name,
(message #3) Plan A: Speak English, then write English, and
(message #3) Steps 2-3: Noun phrase => name => sentence.

Your Noun Phrases and sentences should be about the people in Saijo no Meii, Holly Jones and influenza, or Unsung Cinderella episode [5].

If you HAVE any questions about what you are supposed to be DOING, first DISCUSS the problem with your group, then ... if you are still in doubt, DO what you or your group THINK is right, (RAISE your hand if you're in the classroom,) and SHOW your work to the teacher (the PDS Cycle).
