Exam #1: Making Questions
(Time Limit: 30 minutes)
Students that are in the classroom will (a) LISTEN to the teacher's explanations and instructions and (b) TAKE the exam on paper.
The exam is to see if you can MAKE English questions about events that you WITNESS (that you hear and see). First I will SHOW you about 10-12 minutes of a video in the classroom. AFTER WATCHING the video you will HAVE 30 minutes to WRITE questions.
LET'S GET ready for today's exam. TURN OFF your cellphones. PUT them in your bags and CLOSE the bags. PUT AWAY everything except the things that you NEED for the exam. PUT AWAY your pencil cases, too.
Please TAKE a look at the exam sheet ... WRITE your student number and your name (in Roman letters, of course). LOOK at the directions on the front side.
For each of the following question words, write one (ONLY ONE) discussion question about something specific that you saw or heard in the video. Use a different verb in each question(注意:助動詞は 自由 ですけど 同じ動詞は 二度と 使わない様に).
You will WRITE seven questions, one of which will BEGIN with each of these Wh- question words: who, what, which, when, where, how, and why. You will NOT be ASKED to divide the questions into 4区 , but you must use the question patterns correctly AND have the verb cluster (m V) in an appropriate tense.
Make sure that you MAKE questions that are specific questions about the video story, NOT vague or mechanical questions(曖昧質問又は決まり文句が点数無し). Questions like these will get 0 points:
X Who is Miss Aihara? X Who did Nurse Aoi talk to? X What do you think about Kanji Aragami? X Which pharmacist is younger, Naoko Kariya or Nijiko Kudo? X How about Dr. Hayashi? X Why did Satoko Handa become a pharmacist?
|
These are the kinds of questions someone could ask, even if they HAD NEVER WATCHED the video clip.
Now LOOK at the back side of the exam paper. It has a list of characters names. You may LOOK at these names and WRITE down brief notes (in Japanese or English) about the video story as you WATCH the video. DO NOT TURN the paper over or WRITE on the front side ... until the video is FINISHED and the teacher TELLS you to START. Then you will HAVE 30 minutes to WRITE the seven wh- questions. During this time you may LOOK at your notes and the characters' names on the back side.
Now are you ready for the exam? Do you have any questions? It is your last chance to ASK ... so, please ASK the teacher NOW.

How to Use Level Checks
and the Share Function
Last week some groups HAD trouble USING the share function to SHOW the video clips. I would like to DEMONSTRATE how to do that ... and how to USE the 1-minute Level Checks webpage to DO your Group Work. LET'S REVIEW Lesson 9 quickly.

At the top of your report WRITE
(message #1) your group's name, "Week 10",
(message #2) the leader's name,
(message #3) Plan A: Say an English sentence, then write it.
(message #4) Levels: 3-(4-5-6)-7-(4-5-6)-7 ...
Your sentences should be about the video clips your group Leader SHOWS the group (using the share function). If someone in your group is online, then someone in the classroom (with BOTH camera and microphone ON) should POINT their camera at the screen while the video clip is PLAYING.
If you HAVE any questions about what you are supposed to be DOING, first DISCUSS the problem with your group, then ... if you are still in doubt, DO what you or your group THINK is right, (RAISE your hand if you're in the classroom,) and SHOW your work to the teacher (the PDS Cycle).

These lessons are DESIGNED to HELP Japanese students
to LEARN to SPEAK English as a foreign language. They could be REVERSE ENGINEERED to help English speakers learn to speak Japanese as a foreign language. I would be thrilled to SHARE my ideas about teaching foreign languages with other teachers. You can CLICK the link above to FIND my contact information. |
