4区分析 and Plan B
Your teacher has EXPLAINED the 4区 structures of English AND Japanese sentences. I HOPE you UNDERSTAND those two 4区 patterns now. If you DO, then it is time to PRACTICE them. If you DO NOT, then perhaps you will COME to UNDERSTAND them as you PRACTICE with the other students in your group. As you PRACTICE, REPEAT the English sentences. Repetition is very important. It is what AJ Hoge and Christian Dodds CALL deep learning.
Plan | Japanese Record |
Speaking Practice with Repetition |
English Record |
Haruna | Speak Eng | ||
B | Write Japanese | Speak Eng | |
B (A) | Write Japanese | Speak Eng | (Write English) |
Today we will USE Plan B--Write Japanese, then speak English--and (Haruna's) Step 3--sentences: connected sentences. At the beginning of your Group Meeting you must WRITE the Four-Message Heading at the top of the Chat Box. In the second message you WRITE the Group Leader's name.
Do NOT WRITE any group discussions in the Chat Box. Students that are online should TALK to each other with their microphones and cameras ON. The Chat Box is for your Heading, your Conversation Starters, and your Conversations about assigned videos ONLY.
Conversations START with a sentence (a Conversation Starter) and CONTINUE with connected setences. Before the conversation BEGINS each student in the group will DECIDE how they would LIKE to START the conversation. They will DECIDE in Japanese and WRITE a 4区和文 Japanese Conversation Starter about a scene in one of the assigned video stories ... NO discussion(勝手に ばらばらの和文を 出す).
AFTER these three or four sentences have been WRITTEN in the Teams Chat Box, it is time to DISCUSS them and DECIDE which one will PRODUCE the best (longest, most interesting) conversation. Think about it seriously AND discuss it.
PUT「O」in front of the best sentence and「X」in front of the others. The sentence with the「O」is the first sentence in your group's conversation ... your Conversation Starter. It should clearly IDENTIFY an interesting scene in the story. The student whose sentence won the「O」SAYS the sentence in English, then everyone in the group should REPEAT it. The Japanese sentence should, of course, have been DIVIDED into 4区 (see the examples below).
Japanese Sentences | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
S+ 区 | A+ 区 | O+/C 区 | V 区 | |
These are a few things that you should REMEMBER when WRITING Japanese sentences:
Haruna's Step 3: Sentences | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
S 区 | V 区 | O/C 区 | +A 区 | |
An arrogant doctor | was playing | a game | on a black Play Station. |
|
A young doctor | delivered | a passenger's premature baby. | ||
An old doctor | gave | a little girl a shot. | ||
A steel ball | was stuck | in a little boy's windpipe. |
||
Dr. Saijo | performed | CPR | on a little boy. | |
Ayame | drank | some coffee | from a light brown cup. | |
Dr. Sakamoto | showed | Hayato's family | a model of a liver. |
After REPEATING the Conversation Starter, CONTINUE the conversation. All subsequent sentences must be CONNECTED to sentences that have APPEARED in the conversation before them. There should be NO more discussion, especially in Japanese--NO more 「O」or「X」s--just a natural conversation, written in Japanese, BUT spoken in English.
Don't just write the sentences. Be sure to PRACTICE SAYING them over and over ... faster and faster ... with more and more feeling (like the Bounce Patrol). Yes, it's English Only Time until you RUN OUT of things to SAY and the conversation ENDS.
Then you START a new conversation with new Conversation Starters and another「O X」discussion.
During the Group Work Leaders should MAKE SURE that all students that are online KEEP their microphones ON (so that they can SPEAK) AND their cameras ON (so that they can SEE each other).

Group X2 Week 6 |
Leader: Hanako |
Plan B: Write Japanese, then speak English |
Step 3: Sentences |
X Ellenは 薬を 飲んだ。 |
X EllenとScottは Ellenの病室で kissを した。 |
O Stanley達は groundで 野球を していた。 |
X GonzoとEllenは 更衣室で 口論を した。 |
At the top of your report WRITE
(message #1) your group's name, "Week 6",
(message #2) the leader's name,
(message #3) Plan B: Write Japanese, then speak English, and
(message #4) Step 3: Sentences.
THEN START WRITING your Japanese sentences about the assigned video. DIVIDE each sentence into 4区. Then SAY the sentence in English. Do NOT WRITE the English sentence ... SAY it out loud. Everyone REPEATS ... or SHOUTS OUT a better version of the sentence. REPEAT the best sentence for practice.
Your sentences should be connected to each other .... like a normal conversation. Your conversation(s) today should be about Saijo no Meii episodes [1] or [2].
If you HAVE any questions about what you are supposed to be DOING, first DISCUSS it in your group, then ... if you are still in doubt, DO what you THINK is right, RAISE your hand and SHOW it to the teacher (the PDS Cycle, aka PDCA Cycle).

These lessons are DESIGNED to HELP Japanese students
to LEARN to SPEAK English as a foreign language. They could be REVERSE ENGINEERED to help English speakers learn to speak Japanese as a foreign language.
