4区分析 and Plan A

Your teacher has EXPLAINED the structure of English sentences AND noun phrases in Lessons Two and One. I HOPE you UNDERSTAND those two 4区 patterns now. If you DO, then it is time to PRACTICE them. If you DO NOT, then perhaps you will COME to UNDERSTAND them as you PRACTICE with the other students in your group.

In high school and junior high, you STUDIED lots and lots of grammar rules ... for your English tests. Unfortunately you did not TREAT them as grammar patterns. You did not TAKE the time to PRACTICE them ... USE them for communication ... to SAY things that you WANTED to say. There were lots and lots of very complicated rules ... that you TRIED to MEMORIZE in order to ELIMINATE the wrong answers on multiple-choice exams. You BECAME CONFUSED and FORGOT those rules immediately after TAKING the tests.

Today we will USE Plan A--Speak English, then write English--to PRACTICE two grammar patterns--noun phrases and full sentences (Haruna's) Steps 2 and 3. START with a noun phrase--something that you SAW in the assigned videos. SAY it, then everyone in the group should REPEAT it, while you WRITE it in the Chat Box of your group meeting on Teams. The noun phrases should, of course, be DIVIDED into 4区 (see the examples below).

Haruna's Step 2: Noun Phrases
1 区 2 区 3 区 +a 区
ablack portable Play Station
apregnant passenger
apremature baby
anold doctor
asmall steel ball
 cardiopulmonary resuscitation
abeige cup
aplastic modelof ...
... ahuman liver

Next, you PUT that noun phrase into a sentence about something that HAPPENED in the assigned videos. The sentence should also be DIVIDED into 4区. When you DIVIDE sentences, however, the noun phrases inside the sentence should NOT be DIVIDED (see the examples below).

Haruna's Step 3: Sentences
S 区 V 区 O/C 区 +A 区
An arrogant doctor was playinga gameon a black
portable Play Station.
A handsome young doctor delivereda pregnant passenger's
premature baby.

An old doctor gavea little girl
a shot.

He gavean injectionto a little girl.
A small steel ball was stuck in a little boy's
narrow windpipe.
Dr. Saijo performedCPRon a little boy.
Ayame dranksome coffeefrom a beige cup.
Dr. Sakamoto showedHayato's familya plastic model
of a human liver.

Don't just write the sentences. Be sure to PRACTICE SAYING them over and over ... faster and faster ... with more and more feeling (like the Bounce Patrol).

On Microsoft Teams, please DIVIDE each noun phrase AND each English sentence by PUTTING a half space(半角), two slash marks (//), and another half space(半角)between each of its parts:

a // small steel // ball [21:00]
A small steel ball // was stuck // in a little boy's narrow windpipe.
a // beige // cup [26:41]
Ayame // drank // some coffee // from a beige cup.
a // plastic // model // of ...
... a // human // liver [13:27]
Dr. Sakamoto // showed // Hayato's family // a plastic model of a human liver.

P. D. S. Cycle

Today's Plan for the Group Work is exactly the same as the plans for Week 3 and Week 2. We DO NOT WANT to REPEAT any of the mistakes that we MADE back then. Let's USE the PDS(改善する)Cycle: PLAN(計画), DO(実行), and SEE what HAPPENS(評価)to IMPROVE our understanding of today's patterns and practice plan. Let's LOOK at the Group Work for Week 3. You've HAD two weeks to REVIEW and CORRECT any mistakes in the Group Report. LET'S CHECK them out now.

Time for You to Practice

During the Group Work Leaders should MAKE SURE that all students that are online KEEP their microphones ON (so that they can SPEAK) AND their cameras ON (so that they can SEE each other).

Group X2 Week 5
Leader: Hanako
Plan A: Speak English, then write English
Steps 2-3: Noun phrase/sentence pairs

a // small steel // ball [21:00]
A small steel ball // was stuck // in a little boy's narrow windpipe.
a // beige // cup [26:41]
Ayame // drank // some coffee // from a beige cup.
Now LET's GO to your channels on Teams to ENJOY some English practice in your discussion groups.
You NEED to CHOOSE a leader.

At the top of your report WRITE
(message #1) your group's name, "Week 5",
(message #2) the leader's name,
(message #3) Plan A: Speak English, then write English, and
(message #4) Steps 2-3: Noun phrase/sentence pairs.

THEN START WRITING your phrase/sentence pairs about the assigned video. First SAY a phrase, then WRITE it (while everyone REPEATS). DIVIDE each phrase into 4区. Also WRITE the time that the noun (person, place, or thing) APPEARED in the video [ 時刻 ] .

Then MAKE a sentence USING that Noun Phrase. WRITE it (while everyone REPEATS). DIVIDE each sentence into 4区. The Noun Phrases and sentences should be about Saijo no Meii episodes [1] or [2].

If you HAVE any questions about what you are supposed to be DOING, first DISCUSS the problem with your group, then ... if you are still in doubt, DO what you or your group THINK is right, (RAISE your hand if you're in the classroom) and SHOW it to the teacher (the PDS Cycle).

These lessons are DESIGNED to HELP Japanese students
to LEARN to SPEAK English as a foreign language. They could
be REVERSE ENGINEERED to help English speakers learn to
speak Japanese as a foreign language.
