Plan: Pay Attention
Watch and Listen

We WATCH videos so that we will HAVE something interesting to TALK about. WATCH the entire video (45-90 minutes), at least 10 mintues a day. As you WATCH you should WRITE down sentences about what is HAPPENING in 4区 Japanese OR English, so that you will REMEMBER the story. We are TRYING to CONNECT the images from the video to spoken English--the sound of English AND the motion of your mouth as you SPEAK English.

When you LISTEN to English dialogs, you should PAY attention to the patterns of English--micro-grammar and macro-grammar. NOTICE the 1, 2, 3 区 pattern of full noun phrases. NOTICE the S, V, O/C, +A区 pattern in sentences (and clauses). USE these patterns to make YOUR OWN sentences about what you SEE in the assigned videos.

PAY attention to people and the story (rather than the dialog). The dialog is NOT the main part of the story, the action is. Like Haruna's sentences, your sentences should be about what you SAW(物と事). Unlike her sentences, most of yours will be in past tenses(過去形、過去進行形、過去完了形)AND when you USE pronouns, they will have to REFER to noun phrases that have already APPEARED in the conversation.

Haruna's Step 3: Sentences

Heis running.
Sheis eating a sandwich.
Thereare three trees.
Thisis a big brown table.

An angry samurai was running  after a hungry little girl.
A lonely co-ed was eating some noodlesall by herself.
There were many dressesin a dark room.
They were very colorful,
but old-fashioned.

Although you may USE information from the dialog in your sentences, NEVER QUOTE the dialog. 会話は 聞き取り練習 ではありません。If people SAY something very important, you can USE reported speech (indirect quotations) to EXPLAIN what they SAID.

Some videos PROVIDE subtitles. Subtitles of dialogs can also be GENERATED automatically (but NOT very accurately) by voice recognition and/or translation software. Do NOT COPY these English subtitles.

Reading English will NOT HELP you with your SPEAKING unless you MOVE AWAY from the printed page. You NEED to CREATE a mental link between sentences and their (visual) images. If you START by reading a sentence, you should CONTINUE to REPEAT it until you can SAY it quickly, easily, and automatically with your eyes closed, THINKING only of your mental image of what HAPPENED in the video.

[Let's TRY it now with the sentences
and noun phrases above.]

Write Japanese => Speak English

Sometimes what you really WANT to SAY is difficult to PUT into English quickly, easily, and automatically. DON'T GIVE UP. WRITE it in 4区 Japanese sentences. Each time you write a sentence, SPEAK English while LOOKING at it. It is best to USE a sheet of size B5 paper. FOLD the sheet of paper into four equal columns(半分に折って、そして又半分に折る). At the top of the columns write: S+ A+ O+/C V.

You can DO this while WATCHING the assigned videos at home. When you are FINISHED LOOK at your notes and WRITE the corresponding English sentences: 4区英文. BRING your Japanese notes and English sentences to class. SHOW the English sentences to your teacher for feedback. You can LOOK at your Japanese notes to JOG your memory during classroom discussions.

If you DO SHOW your English sentences to your teacher ... at the top of the paper in large letters you should WRITE: your department (Health, Psychology, Dental, or Economics), 「X2」, then your student number(学籍番号, 21 を抜く), and finally your full name(名前が先に名字は後で).

The division of Japanese sentences is fairly simple. Always PUT the verb(動詞)at the end of the sentence--into the last slot(V 区).

Department X2 Number Full Name
S+ 区 A+ 区 O+/C 区 V 区

Shinkoは母と 喧嘩している。

Debbie 先生は英語の授業で生徒を指名した。

MisatoとShinkoは 親友です。

 電車に間に 合った。

Noun phrases(名詞句)that END in 「は or が」 GO into the first slot(S+ 区). Ones that END in 「を」 GO into the O+ slot. Those that END in other particles(その他の助詞 like 「と, に, and で 」)GO into the A+ slot. Noun phrases that do NOT end in a particle go into the C slot (same slot as O+).

We USE Roman letters(ローマ字)for all names and for foreign loan words(外来語, use foreign spelling). If a noun phrase is too long, then CONTINUE on the next line(same column, 線を守る). Always LEAVE an empty line(一行を空ける)between and above sentences.

On Microsoft Teams, please DIVIDE each Japanese sentence by PUTTING a full space(全角)between each of its parts:

Shinkoは 母と 喧嘩している。
Debbie先生は 英語の授業で 生徒を 指名した。
MisatoとShinkoは 親友 です。
電車に 間に 合った。

Listening => Speaking

So far we've been WATCHING Japanese videos, but speech COMES from listening. To SPEAK English fluently and with confidence, you have to HAVE good listening skills. LISTENING is the key to IMPROVING your English ability.

Your homework for this week is to WATCH the rest of the video about Dr. Mikoto Saijo and the day of his arrival at Heisei Central Hospital. After you SEE it, please WRITE 4区英文 Conversation Starters. You can NAVIGATE from the Class Bulletin Board(掲示板)to the Saijo no Meii webpage. Then CLICK the link for episode [1] (see below).

Bulletin Board => => Saijo no Meii => => episode [1]

It is easier to TELL stories when you USE people's names. You can FIND most of the names on the webpage for Saijo no Meii. CLICK them to SEE people's faces. These are your New Friends TRY to REMEMBER what they LOOK like!! CONCENTRATE on people and the story, not the dialog. You are PREPARING for a conversation about the story. It is something to TALK about ... NOT a listening comprehension exercise. USE your imagination, so you can TALK about what you THINK HAPPENED in the story.

Time for You to Practice

During the Group Work Leaders should MAKE SURE that all students that are online KEEP their microphones ON (so that they can SPEAK) AND their cameras ON (so that they can SEE each other).

会議 Chat

Group X2 Week 3
Leader: Hanako
Plan A: Speak English, then write English
Steps 2-3: Noun phrase/sentence pairs

((鈴)): a // red alarm // clock [2:40]
((山)): A red alarm clock // woke up // a sleepy
college student.
((高)): her // wall // calendar [3:00]
((伊)): She // ripped // a page // off her wall
calendar.
Now LET's GO to your channels on Teams to ENJOY some English practice in your discussion groups.
You NEED to CHOOSE a leader.

At the top of your report WRITE
(message #1) your group's name, "Week 3",
(message #2) the leader's name,
(message #3) Plan A: Speak English, then write English, and
(message #4) Steps 2-3: Noun phrase/sentence pairs.

THEN START WRITING your phrase/sentence pairs about the assigned video. First SAY a phrase, then WRITE it (while everyone REPEATS). DIVIDE each phrase into 4区. Also WRITE the time that the noun (person, place, or thing) APPEARED in the video [ 時刻 ] .

Then MAKE a sentence USING that Noun Phrase. WRITE it (while everyone REPEATS). DIVIDE each sentence into 4区. The Noun Phrases and sentences should be about Saijo no Meii.

If you HAVE any questions about what you are supposed to be DOING, first DISCUSS the problem with your group, then ... if you are still in doubt, DO what you or your group THINK is right, (RAISE your hand if you're in the classroom) and SHOW it to the teacher (the PDS Cycle).

These lessons are DESIGNED to HELP Japanese students
to LEARN to SPEAK English as a foreign language. They could
be REVERSE ENGINEERED to help English speakers learn to
speak Japanese as a foreign language.

I would be thrilled to SHARE my ideas about teaching foreign
languages with other teachers. You can CLICK the link above
