Problems and Review:
4(つの)区 Noun Phases
WELCOME to Week 2. (Have you HAD) Any problems so far? Were you able to NAVIGATE from Lesson 1 to the assigned video? Did you WRITE DOWN some noun phrases as you WATCHED it? Did you PAY attention to the names of the characters in the story? Do you now understand (a) what a noun phrase is and (b) what a full English noun phrase LOOKS like? Do you KNOW how to DIVIDE simple noun phrases into 4区?
Let's GO back to Lesson 1 and review what we learned about English noun phrases. They are extremely import building blocks for MAKING interesting, informative sentences. PAY particular attention to the examples and how they are DIVIDED into 4(つの)区.
From Noun Phases to Sentences
In Lesson 1 Haruna INTRODUCED you to Full 1, 2, 3 区 Noun Phrases (without actually ANALYZING them as such) in Step 2 of her Plan. For practice (Plan A, step 2) you CREATED some 4区 English Noun Phrases about people, places, and things that you SAW in the video「Saijo no Meii」. These phrases that you PRODUCED, however, will be useful in a conversation if and ONLY if you can USE them in sentences. So now we will LOOK at how English sentences are CONSTRUCTED by CONNECTING them to a verb.
Today we are going to BRIDGE Haruna's Step 2 (Noun Phrases) and Step 3 (Sentences). Your Group Work will be to PRODUCE both Noun Phrases and Sentences in pairs (Plan A, steps 2-3). We must, however, be very careful about our approach to grammar, so that it does not ROB us of the ability to SPEAK English quickly, easily, and automatically. Let's LISTEN to A. J. Hoge EXPLAIN his New Approach, which EMPHASIZES phrase and sentence patterns, rather than TREATING grammar as a set of rules.
I'll be more specific than AJ. As you know, there are several kinds of words. About half (50%) of the words that you WANT to LEARN will be nouns; twenty percent (20%) will be verbs; and 17-18% will be adjectives. Those three catagories MAKE UP almost ninty percent (90%) of the vocabulary that you NEED to LEARN.
To learn adjectives and nouns, you should FOCUS on Full 1, 2, 3 区 Noun Phrases. To learn verbs, you must FOCUS on complete sentences. In other words, to be very clear ... you should LEARN noun phrases ... and how to USE them inside a sentence. Furthermore, if that sentence REFERS to a scene from a video that you KNOW well (because you have WATCHED it several times), there will be an associated IMAGE in your mind. The sentence will be much easier to REMEMBER. You will be able to REVIEW it in your head and MASTER its grammar patterns.
FORGET all those complicated grammar rules that you STUDIED in school . Let's LEARN and PRACTICE one simple 4区英文 pattern that APPLIES to all five of the Basic Patterns(五文型)that you briefly STUDIED in high school.
a // red alarm // clock [2:40] | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
#t= | S 区 | V 区 | O/C 区 | +A 区 |
2m40s | A red alarm clock | woke up | a sleepy college student. | |
名詞句 | 1 区 | 2 区 | 3 区 | +a 区 |
S | a | red alarm | clock | |
O | a | sleepy college | student | |
an // old // gorilla [9:02] | ||||
#t= | S 区 | V 区 | O/C 区 | +A 区 |
2m40s | Hanako | took | a photo of herself | next to a statue of an old gorilla. |
名詞句 | 1 区 | 2 区 | 3 区 | +a 区 |
S | Hanako | |||
O | a | photo | of herself | |
A ... | a | (bronze) | statue | of ... |
... A | an | old | gorilla | |
a // big Ferris // Wheel [1:09:07] | ||||
#t= | S 区 | V 区 | O/C 区 | +A 区 |
1h9m7s | Two teenage sisters | had | a serious talk | inside a cabin of a big Ferris Wheel. |
名詞句 | 1 区 | 2 区 | 3 区 | +a 区 |
S | two teenage | sisters | ||
O | a | serious | talk | |
A ... | a | cabin | of ... | |
... A | a | big Ferris | Wheel |
In our Group Reports and for homework assignments, we will DIVIDE English sentences into 4 parts. We will always PUT the English verb(動詞)into the second column from the left(V 区). English subject phrases(in the S区) and object phrases(in the O/C区)do not HAVE any words (+ = 前置詞) to CONNECT them to the verb. S-phrases are simply PLACED immediately before and O-phrases after the verb. C-phrases, like those used with BE 動詞, are TREATED the same as O-phrases.
A-phrases with connecting words (+) GO at the end of a sentence in the last column (+A 区) ... although they are sometimes MOVED into the S区, in front of the S-phrase. So, you SEE, it's a pattern, not a rule. Here are some more examples:
S 区 | V 区 | O/C 区 | +A 区 |
Misato and Shinko | are | (C) very good friends. | |
They | arrived | in time for the train. |
|
Debbie (Ms. Keller) |
called on | (O) two students | during an English class. |
Shinko's mom | has been making | (O) her life (C) miserable. |
All four sentences BEGIN with a subject (S) and a verb (V). The O/C 区 can CONTAIN two noun phrases, one noun phrase, or none DEPENDING on the verb. For example, Be 動詞--SVC; 「arrive」--SV; 「call on」--SVO; and SVOC の「make」. The O/C pattern IDENTIFIES which 五文型 the sentence BELONGS to.
The noun phrases in the last column (+A 区) usually CONTAIN information that is not necessary to make the sentence, but ADDS some extra (and perhaps interesting) information. NOTICE that noun phrases are never SPLIT between 4区 slots when we PRACTICE WRITING sentences. The entire phrase and connnecting word (+ = 前置詞) GO into the same slot. The O/C 区 and +A 区 can CONTAIN more than one noun phrase OR none at all.
On Microsoft Teams, please DIVIDE each English sentence (or noun phrase) by PUTTING a half space(半角), two slash marks (//), and another half space(半角)between each of its parts:
Misato and Shinko // are // very good friends. |
They // arrived // in time // for the train. |
Debbie-sensei // called on // two students // during an English class. |
Shinko's mom // has been making // her life // miserable. |
During the Group Work Leaders should MAKE SURE that all students that are online KEEP their microphones ON (so that they can SPEAK) AND their cameras ON (so that they can SEE each other).

Group X2 Week 2 |
Leader: Hanako |
Plan A: Speak English, then write English |
Steps 2-3: Noun phrase/sentence pairs |
((鈴)): a // red alarm // clock [2:40] |
((山)): A red alarm clock // woke up // a sleepy college student. |
((高)): her // wall // calendar [3:00] |
((伊)): She // ripped // a page // off her wall calendar. |
At the top of your report WRITE
(message #1) your group's name, "Week 2",
(message #2) the leader's name,
(message #3) Plan A: Speak English, then write English, and
(message #4) Steps 2-3: Noun phrase/sentence pairs.
THEN START WRITING your phrase/sentence pairs about the assigned video. First SAY a phrase, then WRITE it (while everyone REPEATS). DIVIDE each phrase into 4区. Also WRITE the time that the noun (person, place, or thing) APPEARED in the video [ 時刻 ] .
Then MAKE a sentence USING that Noun Phrase. WRITE it (while everyone REPEATS). DIVIDE each sentence into 4区. The Noun Phrases and sentences should be about Saijo no Meii.
If you HAVE any questions about what you are supposed to be DOING, first DISCUSS the problem with your group, then ... if you are still in doubt, DO what you or your group THINK is right, (RAISE your hand if you're in the classroom) and SHOW it to the teacher (the PDS Cycle).
