Exam #2 for Hybrid Classes
(the Dental classes)

Students in hybrid classes will TAKE the exam when they are in the classroom (Week 12 ... OR ... Week 13).

Students that are online will BREAK UP into their discussion groups, GO to their channels, and START a meeting. USING their share function, they will READ the lecture for Week 12 (whether it is Week 12 ... OR ... Week 13). Then they will do the Group Work as described in the lesson ... until the end of the class period.

Names: Who's Who?

When WATCHING a video story, you can UNDERSTAND a lot of what HAPPENS simply by WATCHING carefully, even with the sound off. You can SEE what people are doing. You can HEAR (if you don't turn off the sound) their tone of voice and TELL if they are happy, in love, angry, or sad. Do NOT FOCUS on the details of the dialog at first. CONCENTRATE on the story. And to do that, you NEED to KNOW who the characters are--MATCH the names with the faces.

Saijo no Meii was a TV hospital drama (based on a manga series). The Japanese dialogs are easy for students to understand. Mikoto Saijo is a new hot-shot surgeon at Heisei Central Hospital, just back from America. His mentor, Mamoru Shindo RECOMMENDED him to Hidetoshi Noguchi, the Director of the Hospital. Mikoto himself mentors an intern by the name of Maria Sena and FIGHTS with Assistant Director Sadame Kiryu to RE-ESTABLISH a pediatric department.

Exam #2: Extended Answers

Today you will HAVE your second of three exams. It will be an in-class exam. There is no online option. When the exam begins you will be PRESENTED with 6 questions and be GIVEN directions like this:

Choose two (ONLY TWO) of the following questions. Give a short answer. Then add more information or some comments using 4 full sentences (just as you might do in a normal conversation).

You will GET 30 minutes to ANSWER the two questions ... with extended answers. You will NOT be ASKED to divide noun phrases OR sentences into 4区 .

We will NOT WATCH any videos today, prior to the exam. You should have PREPARED for the exam by REVIEWING the first three episodes of Saijo no Meii. Try to REMEMBER people's names AND FILL your head with as much information about the stories as possible, so that you will HAVE lots of concrete, interesting information to ADD to your two short answers.

I'll GIVE you some time to REFRESH your memory about the names and events in these three stories. You can USE Plan A--Speak English, then write English--and (Haruna's) Steps 2 and 3--a noun phrase describing one of the people in the story => the name => a sentence about something they did.

You may USE a (paper, not electric) dictionary today. Please TAKE OUT any dictionaries that you will USE and your student ID card. I will be CHECKING them while you PREPARE for the exam.

((check dictionaries, IDs, and
the students' seating))

LET'S GET ready for today's exam. TURN OFF your cellphones. PUT them in your bags and CLOSE the bags. PUT AWAY everything except the things that you NEED for the exam. PUT AWAY your pencil cases, too.

No more talking. If you have any questions, RAISE you hand and ASK the teacher.

The questions are on the front of the exam AND the characters' names on the back. DO NOT LOOK at the front side yet. KEEP the back side (with the names) FACING UP until you are TOLD to BEGIN.
