4区分析 and Plan A
Your teacher has EXPLAINED the structure of English (declarative) sentences AND questions in Lessons Two and Seven. I HOPE you UNDERSTAND those two 4区 patterns now. If you DO, then it is time to PRACTICE them. If you DO NOT, then perhaps you will COME to UNDERSTAND them as you PRACTICE with the other students in your group.
Yes, you can LEARN by PRACTICING with other students. If you do not HAVE any confidence about the patterns as you TRY to USE them, first DISCUSS it with your group, then ... if you are still in doubt, DO what you or your group THINK is right, (RAISE your hand if you're in the classroom) and SHOW it to the teacher (the PDS Cycle).

Haruna | Speak Eng | ||
A | Speak Eng | Write Eng |
Today we will USE Plan A--Speak English, then write English--and Levels 3 and 6 of the list of Conversation Skills--a (declarative) sentence and then two or three questions. Use the Share Function(共有)to WATCH one of the video clips on the webpage for "1-minute Level Checks". The link is at the top of this lesson. WATCH two or three minutes of it together as a group. Then the Group Leader should ASK the group, "What HAPPENED?"
During the second minute, members of the group (in turn) quickly REPEAT the sentence or CORRECT it (simply by SAYING the corrected sentence out loud in a clear voice). Everyone LISTENS and THINKS carefully about the differences in the sentences that they HEAR. (DO NOT WRITE anything yet.) Continue until you all AGREE on a Final Version of the sentence.
Then the person who said it STARTS to WRITE it [and the card name of the video clip] in the Chat Box of your group meeting on Teams, while everyone REPEATS it in unison. This is the third minute. Be sure to DIVIDE the sentence into 4区, after WRITING it (see examples below).
It should TAKE your group about three minutes to PRODUCE, CORRECT, and PRACTICE the sentence. Someone in your group should KEEP time.
Haruna's Step 3: Sentences | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
S 区 | V 区 | O/C 区 | +A 区 | |
A young doctor | delivered | a passenger's premature baby. | ||
An old doctor | gave | a little girl a shot. | ||
A steel ball | was stuck | in a little boy's windpipe. |
||
Dr. Saijo | performed | CPR | on a little boy. | |
Dr. Sakamoto | showed | Hayato's family | a model of a liver. |
Next, you ASK two or three questions about that sentence in order to FIND OUT more about the story. For each question you should FOLLOW the same 3-minute procedure that is DESCRIBED above (for the sentence). The questions, like the sentence, should also be DIVIDED into 4区 (see the table below).
Step 4: Questions,
Step 5: followed by short answers |
||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Wh- 区 | m-S-V 区 | O/C 区 | +A 区 | |
Did the doctor need | any help? | |||
Yes, he | did. | |||
Who | helped | him? | ||
An old lady and a flight attendant | ||||
Did the boy die? | ||||
No, he | didn't. | |||
No, Mikoto | saved | his life. | ||
How | did he save | the boy? | ||
with a straw and CPR | ||||
Was Dr. Sakamoto going to perform | an operation | on Hayato? | ||
No, he | wasn't. | |||
No, it | is | too difficult. |
Questions are a very important part of communication. People who are skillful at THINKING of and ASKING questions MAKE excellent conversation partners.
When a wh- question is ASKED, it can usually be ANSWERED with a noun phrase (and its preposition), rather than a full sentence. In fact, that is more natural. Yes/no questions can usually be ANSWERED ... with a 「yes」 or a 「no」... sometimes FOLLOWED by a pronoun and an auxillary verb(助動詞).
Some English teachers TELL their students that a conversation is like a game of catch (catchball in Japanese). Unfortunately this GIVES students the idea that they should ASK a question right after GIVING a short answer. That often BREAKS UP the flow of the conversation OR TURNS it into a 発表会 . Instead your converations should be more like baseball than a game of catch. THINK of the questions that people ASK ... as pitches. You are the batter. After you GIVE a short answer (a hit), you must RUN at least to first base (by ADDING more information in full declarative sentences).
But ... why STOP at first base? GO all the way home, if you can ... four CONNECTED sentences. Connected in the same way as the sentences in a smooth, flowing conversation (see Lesson 9). Let's try it NOW. Here is the pitch (a yes/no question): Did Mikoto grab a woman by the arm?
Advice from People
on the Internet
Listening to the advice of various teachers and learners can give you ideas and keep you motivated to continue your quest for fluency in a second language.
Chi is right about Basic English (Jr. High level). Easy English is very powerful. Native speakers USE it all the time. You should, too. CONCENTRATE on the sentence patterns of common verbs ... and then the noun phrases that go with those verbs. LISTEN (and look) for full noun phrases(1区 2区 3区)... PUT them into your sentences.
Singing English songs can HELP you with natural English pronunciation. FIND the lyrics on YouTube and sing along with your favorite songs. It will PROVIDE very natural repetition (=> deep learning). The words and phrases will STICK in your head(身に付く)and they will be in the context of a song ... and often a background story.
WATCH dramas in English ... TALK about them ... more English in a story context. TRY REPEATING dialog while REVIEWING foreign TV dramas and movies (simultaneously = shadowing). If you want to be able to TALK about your personal life in English (something we avoid, here in class, as being too personal), WRITE a journal in 4区 Japanese then PRACTICE SAYING it in English AND then you could write it in English.
I never test your knowledge of these videos which give advice for learning English. They are simply to help you become a better language learner now and in the long run ... after you finish my class and after you graduate from Aichi Gakuin University.
During your Group Work, do NOT just WRITE down the sentences and questions. SAY them in a loud voice (with your microphones ON) before you even START to WRITE them down. HELP other students by CORRECTING and IMPROVING their sentences. Be sure to REPEAT the (corrected) sentences and questions over and over again ... faster and faster ... with more and more feeling.
During the Group Work Leaders should MAKE SURE that all students that are online KEEP their microphones ON (so that they can SPEAK) AND their cameras ON (so that they can SEE each other).

Group X2 Week 11 |
Leader: Hanako |
Plan A: Speak English, then write English |
Steps 3-4: Sentence, then question(s) |
((山)): Dr. Saijo // operated // on Hayato's liver. |
((高)): Where // was Sadame // during the operation? |
((鈴)): An intern // assisted // Dr. Saijo. |
((伊)): Which intern // assisted // him? |
At the top of your report WRITE
(message #1) your group's name, "Week 11",
(message #2) the leader's name,
(message #3) Plan A: Speak English, then write English, and
(message #4) Steps 3-4: Sentence, then questions.
THEN START WRITING your sentence/question pairs about the assigned video stories. First SAY a sentence, then WRITE it (while everyone REPEATS). DIVIDE each sentence into 4区.
Then MAKE a question about that sentence. WRITE it (while everyone REPEATS). DIVIDE each question into 4区. The sentences and questions should be about the video clips your group Leader SHOWS the group (using the share function). If someone in your group is online, then someone in the classroom (with BOTH camera and microphone ON) should POINT their camera at the screen while the video clip is PLAYING.
If you HAVE any questions about what you are supposed to be DOING, first DISCUSS the problem with your group, then ... if you are still in doubt, DO what you or your group THINK is right, (RAISE your hand if you're in the classroom,) and SHOW your work to the teacher (the PDS Cycle).

These lessons are DESIGNED to HELP Japanese students
to LEARN to SPEAK English as a foreign language. They could be REVERSE ENGINEERED to help English speakers learn to speak Japanese as a foreign language. I would be thrilled to SHARE my ideas about teaching foreign languages with other teachers. You can CLICK the link above to FIND my contact information. |
