Where is Magenta?

Color Cube
This slice of the Color Cube (photo on left) is not flat. There are 256 colors. All of them composed of 15 units of light (blue or red). Let's look at the arrangement. We have bright magenta (hex code ff-00-ff) in the lower left corner and blue (0000-ff), red (ff-0000), and white (ffffff) in the others. As we move in a straight line from magenta to each of the other corners, we are subtracting blue units of light (horizontally) or red units (vertically) units.

Combining green units with magenta converts that same number of magenta units into white units (m+g=w). That's what happens when you move diagonally from the magenta corner to the white one. This diagonal line divides our layer into two trianglular areas: a blue area and a red one. As you move around inside each area, you flip some of the 15 units of light. Moving perpendicular to the magenta-white line flips magenta units to white as you move up and to the right. It flips white units to magenta as you move in the opposite direction (down and to the left).

Inside the blue Triangle, moving horizontally (perpendicular to the blue-white line) flips blue to white if you go right, and white to blue if you go left. Moving vertically flips blue to magenta (down) OR magenta to blue (up). Inside the Red Triangle on the other hand, moving vertically flips white and red, while moving horizontally flips magenta and red. What do you suppose happens when you move diagonally from the blue corner to the red one? As you move through the Blue Triangle, you flip two units of blue to one magenta unit and one white. After you cross into the Red Triangle, you flip one magenta unit and one white unit into two red ones.

This is the magenta "pallette". You can use
red OR blue, but NOT together.

What about some other shades of green? Where are they? What are their proportions?
