Saturday inspection

The Band lived in West Lodge, an old two-story motel on the edge of campus, next to Lake Maxinkuckee. Three cadets shared a room, each with its own bathroom. Quite a luxury.

As a plebe (first year cadet) I roomed with Dave O'Berry (who left school after one year) and Richard Hough. In the spring we became Old Men and I switched rooms with Tom Handley, moving in with Daley and Ingram across the hall. In my junior and senior years I lived with Jeff Marxen, who became First Sgt. (two stripes and a diamond) and Jay Miracle, who was First Sgt and then became Company Commander (four stripes).

Front: Lee, Marxen, Miracle,
Kleckley, Erwin, and Hess.

The ''Zoo'' football team
of 1968 in action

This photo (above, left) taken in the fall of 1969 shows them in the front row. Directly behind Marxen is Roger ''the Fish'' Karney (3 rows up) and me (9 rows up). Richard Hough is two rows down from me and slightly to the left. Bill Daley is all the way up in back of Battalion Supply Officer Lew Erwin (three stripes on top of the triangle and three horizontal stripes on the bottom).

RJ as a labrat
It was in the fall of 1968 that the Band achieved fame in intramural sports as the ''Zoo''. Both the football and the soccer teams won the regimentals champanionships. At first zoo was a term cadets in the Band used in reference to Beason Hall (the senior class club house) and its smoke-fiend denizens. The Beason Boys turned that term around employing it as a derogatory label for the Band, ... which in turn embraced its nickname and created the Zoo Chant (zoo, zoo, zoo, zoo ...) to instill fighting spirit in the company and its football team.
