A Greek surgeon named Herophilus [335-280 BC] first identified the pancreas. This organ is located below the stomach, nestled in a bend in the duodenum. It functions as two glands. The exocrine pancreas stores digestive enzymes and secretes them--trypsin, chymotrypsin, lipase, and amylase-- and an
alkaline fluid, rich in
bicarbonate and salt, into the small intestines.
The endocrine pancreas consists of a million small glands called the islets of Langerhans, which produce and secrete hormones. There are four main types of cells. Alpha cells secrete glucagon, while beta cells secrete insulin. Together glucagon and insulin control blood sugar level. Delta cells secrete somatostatin, and PP cells secrete polypeptide. Pancreatic activity is regulated by hormones in the blood and by sympathetic (alpha2) and parasympathetic (M3) nerves.
