The Graduate School of Letters has four doctoral programs i.e., Buddhist and Religious Studies, History, Studies of English Speaking Cultures and Japanese Culture. Each area has outstanding professors. The School's principal purpose is to prepare students and researchers for independent and highly professional service. It has also been highly successful as an institute for continuing education.
Abundant literature and research facilities are available. There are voluntary workshops for graduate Students. Students also contribute papers to the Journal of the Graduate School of Humanities and give presentations at the national academic conferences.
The Graduate School of Buddhist and Religious Studies
The Department of Buddhist and Religious Studies focuses on three fields: Buddhism,Zen- Buddhism and Religion. It has enhanced its Buddhism studies by analyzing original texts such as Pah sacred book, Zen-studies by reading such typical classics of Zen as 'Shobogenzo' and 'Eihei:koroku',and Religious studies by reading overseas documents and classics on advanced theory and religious history. It provides the opportunity for making high quality study here with abundant documents in both quality and quantity and research facilities such as the institute of Zen-Buddhism.
The Graduate School of History
The Department of History aims to investigate Japanese,Oriental,Western and Islamic History,and Archeology. It provides the opportunity for studying various historical areas from Cultural, Socio-Economic and Political History to Archeology depending on each student's subject of interest.
The Graduate School of Studies of English-Speaking Culture
The Department of Studies of English-Speaking Culture aims to research English-speaking culture in the Asia-Pacific basin such as East/Southeast/South Asia as well as the West from a wide range of view. The department provides the opportunity for studying under the foremost experts on the following varieties of fields: Culture and history of the U.S.A. and the U.K.,Studies of English and American Literatures, English Linguistics,English Teaching method,Comparative Cultural Study, Area studies of Asian Countries, Religion,Cultural Exchange,Cultunal Friction and Sociology.
The Graduate School of Studies of Japanese Culture
In response to the internationalized society,the Department of Studies of Japanese Culture aims to provide the world oriented study based on Japanese culture.It provides the opportunity to learn about Japanese culture from a wide range of fields such as Japanese Linguistics,Liferature,Sociology,Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology.It carries on interdisciplinary research to send Japanese culture to the world in a comprehensive manner. It also accepts a number of foreign students so that it achieves satisfactory results in understanding how foreigners view Japanese culture.
